One of the great books of the year. Think a post-apocalyptic, coal-dark Little Red Riding Hood meets western revenge elements of True Grit and Cormac McCarthy. Beth Lewis’ writing is pitch-perfect throughout, her characters tough and imposing, and the action rarely lets up, much less the horror. It’s a classic cat and mouse game played out in rugged, Revenant-like woods where you never know what lurks just beyond the trees. Truly a special book that subverts and surprises in equal measures. Deserving of all the praise it received this year and a page-turner of the highest caliber. You won’t forget Elka, Trapper, Penelope, Colby, The Thompsons, Nana, or Lyon or their fates anytime soon.
